Potassium is a nutrient the body needs in small amounts, but plays very important functions in different organs and systems. It is responsible for transmitting impulses in the nervous system and muscles. One of its most recognizable features is that it makes possible the heartbeat, also regulates blood pressure decreasing it when it’s high.

Usually it is difficult to have a potassium deficiency because the ideal amount we need is low and they are many foods that contain it, such as bananas, tomatoes, avocado, red meat, milk, chicken, potatoes , among others.

Potassium is a nutrient that the body is easily removed when you have symptoms of dehydration (diarrhea or vomiting), children are more vulnerable because they have systems of balance in its development agency, so they can not answer quickly and effectively to a loss of electrolytes (like potassium) to have diarrhea, and worse if you also vomiting.

Also when the kids play, sweat and do not recover properly liquids at risk of becoming dehydrated and lose electrolytes such as potassium.

It is very important to care for proper hydration of young children. Up to 6 years should take at least one and a half liters of fluid a day and you have to listen to them whenever they ask. Remember that children play, they forget that they are thirsty, so it is necessary for adults to be vigilant and make drinking water (or lemonade, orange juice, chicha morada) every so often.

Remember that soft drinks and nectars and juices hydrate and contain no artificial too much sugar, colorings and preservatives, so they are not an option when re-hydrated infants are treated, although some suggest that juices contain potassium, sodium and other electrolytes.
